Si Lund is a musician and composer based in Bristol, England, making quiet, spacious music somewhere between Scandinavian jazz, contemporary classical music and electronica.

He previously led Lund Quartet, writing most of the group’s material and performing piano, theremin and strings. The quartet’s music combined the sparseness of Scandinavian jazz with influences from Bristol’s electronic music scene, particularly dub and trip-hop. Their self-titled album received national press coverage, with The Wire describing it as “de-cluttered, minimal and atmospheric” and Jazzwise comparing its sound to “Tord Gustavsen being haunted by ghostly fragments of brass and muttered voices.”

His current work continues many of those ideas in a more intimate setting, centred around piano, strings, theremin and subtle electronics. Much of it is written, recorded and filmed in his studio in Bristol - sometimes completely solo, sometimes built from several layered live performances, and increasingly through collaborations with other musicians.

Norway has always been an important part of Lund’s musical life. Having spent much of his life travelling there and growing up listening to Norwegian music, the space, restraint and melancholy of Scandinavian jazz remain a strong influence. Bristol provides the other side of that musical identity: Lund originally moved to the city because of its music scene, and its more atmospheric electronic music continues to find its way into his work.

Alongside piano, his instruments include violin, viola, cello, Hardanger fiddle, theremin, dulcitone and an old Casiotone keyboard found at a car boot sale in Malaysia. Tape echo, homemade plate reverb and other analogue textures also form part of the sound.

Lund is currently writing and recording new music for solo performance, duos and a number of evolving live ensembles, with studio performances and collaborations being released regularly.
